Seat types on Pakistan Railways
Pakistan railways have 5 types of seat classes, which can be divided into seat carriages and sleeper carriages. And those carriages can be sorted into air-conditioned ones and non-air-conditioned ones. Air-conditioned carriages are cleaner, safer and more comfortable than non-air-conditioned ones.
1. Air-Conditioned Sleeper Class (AC Sleeper)
The air-conditioned Sleeper class is only available on a few types of express trains, such as the Khyber Mail, Sir Syed Express Express and Tezgam Express. It is the most premium and expensive class. The ticket fare is almost as expensive a domestic flight ticket fare.
The Air- Conditioned first class consists of 2-berth or 4 berth sleeper compartments, with lockable doors. The Compartments are spacious, clean and well maintained. Each compartment has a separate toilet inside the compartment. A pillow, sheet, blanket and towel are provided for each berth in Sir Syed Express.
Each compartment has LED, Charging points and space for luggage.
The Air-conditioned sleeper is the most expensive class of Pakistan Railways and it provides a high level of comfort and privacy. It is cleaner and quieter than non air-conditioned class.
2. Air-Conditioned Business Class (AC Business)
There are 6 berths in each compartment, 2 lower berths, 2 middle berths and 2 upper berths. The middle berth will be folded up during the day, allowing passengers to sit on the lower beth, so the lower berth will be sat on by other passengers.
Each compartment has lockable doors. The Compartments are spacious, clean and well maintained. In some trains each compartment has LED i.e Greenline & Sir Syed Express. There is no Toilet inside the AC Business class compartment. Toilets are available at the end of coach on both sides.
A pillow, sheet, blanket and towel are provided for each berth. It has a privacy. The Charging Points, large space for luggage and single seats out of each compartment are available.
It is recommended for long distance journey. It is comfortable, cleaned and well maintained.
3. Air-Conditioned Standard Class (AC Standard)
There are 6 berths in each open-plan compartment, 2 lower berths, 2 middle berths, and 2 upper berths. There are also side berths (lower berth and upper berth) across the hall on the other side of compartment. There are no doors for each compartment, but curtains are available in few trains to separate the compartments. Only in Sir Syed Express train, Pillow, Sheet, blanket and tower are provided for AC Standard class’s passengers.
It is the cheapest air-conditioned class
It is further divided into two types. Berths form and seats forms. In Rail cars that runs between Lahore and Rawalpindi AC Standard has seats. It has only seats. While Berths form AC Standard has 6 berths compartment and side berths.
4. Air-Conditioned Parlor Class (AC Parlor)
Air-conditioned Parlor is very popular for travelers between Lahore and Rawalpindi. It is spacious, cleaned and well maintained class. It has only seats in hall. Each seat is flexible and passenger can easily sleep on it.
It is a good choice for travelers who travel in rail cars. The Hall is open like a bus. So it has no privacy. The Charging points are available on some seats.
5. Non Air-Conditioned Class (Economy Class)
It has the compartments of 6 berths. Each compartment has 2 upper berths, 2 middle berths and 2 lower berths. Single seats are available in front of compartments. All berths and single seats are reserved for passengers. It is the cheapest class of Pakistan Railways.
Each train has Economy class coaches. Economy class is always overcrowded, noisy and smelly. Passengers without seats usually sit or lie on the floor. It gets very stuffy and uncomfortable because there is no air-conditioning.
