Who is a Train Guard in Pakistan Railways?
The Train Guard is one of the most important operational staff members in Pakistan Railways. He/she is responsible for the safe and timely operation of the train. The Guard works closely with the Driver, Assistant Driver, Station Masters, and Signal staff to ensure a smooth journey.
Duties & Responsibilities of a Train Guard:
1. Train Departure & Arrival:
- Ensures that the train departs only after receiving the proper signals.
- Checks and records arrival and departure timings at each station.
2. Safety Checks:
- Verifies brakes, coupling, vacuum/air pressure before departure.
- Checks the condition of coaches and communicates with the Driver.
3. Communication:
- Uses green and red flags, whistles, and walkie-talkie for communication.
- Issues the "Right to Proceed" signal to the Driver.
4. Passenger Management:
- Helps maintain discipline in trains.
- Ensure the safety of passengers in trains.
- Make arrangements for meals if dining car is not available in train.
- Coordinates with the Railway Police in case of emergency.
5. Shunting Operations:
- Supervises attaching/detaching of coaches and locomotives during shunting.
6. Emergency Handling:
- Acts as in-charge in case of accidents or breakdowns.
- Uses detonators and hand signals to stop trains in emergencies.
Location on Train:
The Guard travels in the last coach, called the Guard Van (Brake Van), which is equipped with:
- Emergency tools
- First aid box
- Communication system
- Logbooks and registers
- Complaint Book.
Uniform & Appearance:
A Train Guard usually wears:
- White or light blue shirt.
- Navy blue pants
- Cap with Pakistan Railways badge
- Identity card
